High School - Adults

Introduction to Stone Carving

Tuesdays; 6:30-8:30pm; March 9, 16, 23, & 30;
Instructor: Charlotte Darling-Diehl

Learn the techniques of direct carving on soft stone with nationally-known stone carver Charlotte Darling-Diehl. Students will be instructed in carving, finishing and mounting techniques. Tool rental and stone are included in class fee.

 


Bead Weaving: Circles

Wednesdays; 6:00-9:00pm; January 20, 27, &  February 3;

Circles are a primary and useful shape for designing jewelry.  Learn off-loom beading techniques from an instructor who teaches at major national bead shows and who has been featured in the leading bead magazines.   Weave circles to use as stand-alone earrings or pendants or combine with other beads to make bracelets or necklaces.  Circular netting, brick stitch, and herringbone/Ndebele stitches will be included in this three-session workshop, suitable for beaders of every level.  Instruction will be individualized to suit each participant.  Most supplies are provided; a materials list will be provided at registration.
Phyllis Dintenfass is a long-time and passionate bead artist.  She was a finalist in the 2002 Bead Dreams competition and has been published in Bead and Button magazine.  Her work has been exhibited and purchased in this country and abroad.  Her current interest is in off-loom and seed bead weaving.  You can see her beadwork on

Ceramics

Ceramics class is open to all beginning-level students. The pottery wheel is used to learn throwing techniques as well as hand-built pieces. Sue Rolf creates a relaxing, fun environment great for a group of friends to gather and create some "fun"ctional art. Students are encouraged to take this class repeatedly to practice their skills. All materials are included.  
Sue Rolf holds a Bachelor of Fine arts degree from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and specializes in wheel throwing and altered porcelain. She also develops her own glazes. Sue's ceramic class has been a favorite of many returning art students from Appleton Art Center for years.

 


 


Beginner's Drawing

Join artist and instructor Horace Davis in this beginning level drawing and painting class. Explore drawing technique, shape, form, perspective, composition, and color. Figure Drawing for Beginners

Learn to draw the human form with use of a live model. Join artist and instructor Horace Davis in this beginning level figure drawing class. Discover drawing techniques, shape, perspective, and composition in relation to the figure. A supply list will be provided. 

   

Moving Beyond Manual Mode

This class will explore the functions of the DSLR camera and allow you to take a bold step away from letting the camera make all the decisions, putting you in the photographic driver's seat. This course will be structured around the basic building blocks of how aperature, shutter speed and ISO effect an image, as well as a Q & A opportunity.

Watercolor for Beginners

This beginners level class will introduce students to the very basics of watercolor painting.  Explore simple techniques that will create a masterpiece of your own. All materials included.

 

Carol Derks is a member of the Appleton Art Center and working artist and instructor. While she mainly works in watercolor, she also explores acrylic, oil, graphite, and printmaking. She teaches beginner's art classes at the Thompson Center and  the City of Appleton Park and Rec and exhibits her work throughout the surrounding area.

 


Painting from Photographs

Mondays;

March 8, 15, 22, & 29

Join artist, David Kapszukiewicz, as he demonstrates how photographs can help and/or hinder a painting.  Students will create dynamic and appealing paintings though observation and contemplation along with the use of shape-making, value, line, color, color temperature and edges.  Choose between oil, acrylic, or watercolor as your medium. A materials list will be provided.

 

Primarily an oil painter, David also works in graphite, acrylic and some watercolor. With a BA from University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, majoring in Art. During a 33-year career as a graphic artist,  he took a few fine art classes and gradually improved his skills. In November, 2007, he applied for and was accepted at the Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art. 

 

David has exhibited his work at Secura Art Show (2009 Honorable Mention), Barnsite Gallery (Kewaunee), the Appleton Art Center, The Gallery at American National Bank, The Jack Richeson Gallery and numerous individual art shows. He has been invited to have one-man show at the Wild Apple Gallery in Menasha in 2010. David's work can be viewed at www.kapsfineart.com.

 

   

   

Drawing and Painting Techniques

This course will free the student from working within conventional modes of representation. Students will attempt to develop their own visual language through the experimentation of non-traditional techniques for working with color and applying paint and drawing media. This course is grounded in contemporary art philosophy and practice, which requires a willingness to explore outside the boundaries of traditional image making.  

 

Materials Needed:

Small assortment of brushes

Assortment of tube paints

Pencils/Pens

*We will discuss additional materials the first class and decide what may appropriately fit your needs.

 

Tony Conrad received his BFA and MA degrees in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he teaches part-time in theDepartment of Visual Art. Conrad's abstract paintings explore a range of visual realities that are influenced by mystery, imagination, and memory.  His most current work explores similar phenomena, focusing on his rural upbringing and investigations of oddities from popular culture.  Conrad's work has been exhibited in several solo, group, and invitational exhibitions and has won a number of awards including the Lawrence Rathsack Scholarship and the Frederick R. Layton Fellowship.  Recently, his paintings have been exhibited at the Appleton Art Center and the APW Gallery in NYC.

 


Open Studio

Take advantage of our well-equipped studio spaces furnished with tables, chairs, easels, pottery wheels, ceramic tools, and a kiln, as well as fantastic natural lighting. Bring your art materials and the art you are currently creating. For those interested, peer critique sessions take place regularly. Studio usage is FREE to all members as well as those who are enrolled in an adult class.

Toddler- Time (2-3 Ages)

 

Toddler Time classes offer Toddlers and Parents an opportunity to explore art from the developmental point of view of two and three year olds. These classes help children develop their fine motor skills, build imagination, and experiment with mixed media. Classes include stories and an art project related to each theme.

 

Sensational Art

Enhance your toddler's brain development with this fun sensory-rich art class.  Different sensory stations will be utilized to explore different textures, smells, sounds, and visually appealing materials.

 


Winter Wonderland

Toddlers will explore the magic of winter by creating a fun mixed-media picture. In this mixed media class, students will experiment with paint, glue, glitter and more.

 

Fun with Fingerpainting

Toddlers will explore color-mixing all with the joys of their little fingertips! This is a great way to introduce your child to painting and expressing themselves. Art smocks will be provided, but please have children wear appropriate clothing, as creativity may work it's way off the canvas!

Students will create 3 dimensional works of art out of paper mache. Whether it's a Mardi Gras mask, or a purple elephant, this is fun class to use your imagination and experiment with various mediums.

Pendant Making

Students will design and create ceramic pendants and incorporate them into jewelry. Once clay pendants are glazed and fired, students will tie it all together by choosing various jewelry strings and clasps. These wearable works of art will amaze you!
